I woke up super pissed today.
Sundays during the fall and winter are soup days. I make soup for dinner just about every single Sunday from September until the end of March. The Instant Pot is my best friend, and we love to get a loaf of fresh sourdough bread from Panera. Soup Sundays is a thing we all look forward to in my house. And I especially love the leftovers. ‘Cause you know, soup is one of those things that is even better the next day.
Yesterday, I chopped, measured, poured, scooped, and created a roux. I shredded and stirred and ladled. That creamy chicken and wild rice soup last night was savory and flavorful. I cleaned everything up and left the soup to cool before packing it up for the next few days’ lunches. There would even be plenty for Boy to have a few meals (my 20-year-old son, Jake, we call him BOY).
Fast forward to my alarm going off at 6:10 this morning. And as soon as I hit consciousness, I knew.
I never put the soup away. I never got out my containers and lovingly ladled my lunch scoops into their vessels. I let an hour of work and a week’s salary worth of chicken breast go to waste. I mean, have you been grocery shopping lately? It probably would have been cheaper to make lobster bisque! But regardless. It. Was. All. Wasted.
And here’s the kicker: I said out loud, in bed to my fiance as we were both waking up at the same time, “I FORGOT TO PUT THE SOUP AWAY!” And he says, I kid you not, “Oh, I saw it last night and wondered why it was still out.”
Maybe my upset wasn’t so irrational after all.
NOOOOOOO! That’s terrible, I’m so sorry!

I can so relate! We also have Soup Sunday from Fall break until Spring Break. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve almost forgotten to put it away. I can feel your pain and I’m sorry! I would be pissed too!

Quite a story here! Your being upset is so understandable. And then to add insult to injury – your fiance’s response! Well… at least you have a great slice!!

I love the different ways this relatively short slice moves through different emotions: calm and warm, the familiarness of a much-loved routine, panic, and finally anger (with a healthy dose of humor). So good!

That is heartbreaking. I am feeling so sad for you! There is nothing like a good soup or chili in the fall/winter.

Oh no!!! I do understand , it happen to all of us ! The last time was “spaghetti” . I told my daughter,”hijita, I cooked so you clean” “Yes mami”. I went upstairs. Went to sleep. Woke up early that day, go downstairs , the spaghetti was still on the stove” … Another time “rice pudding” … so I guess it happens more often than what you might think. Today just get chipotle for dinner 🙂

That’s a bummer. I thought for sure you were just going to say you’d forgotten to take it to work. 😦
