Inspired by Lunch with a Friend

Whatever it is that persuades the universe to bring certain people into our lives, I can reflect on my life thus far and be so so thankful for the people who have come into mine. They have not all been good, but have taught me things about myself, and allowed me to have experiences and get through parts of my life that have made me who I am today. I can’t really go back in my past and pinpoint any one person I wish I had never met. And that may be surprising for those of you who know me.

That being said, 7 years ago I was going into school to set up my classroom before the first day.  As I passed the classroom next to mine, I see this thin, tan, pretty, young girl up on a ladder, decorating a bulletin board. I said hello as I passed and she smiled and came down to meet me, full of excitement and naivete. She was one of my new teammates and I still remember my first thought being, “Really? This cute, peppy girl?” (as I reflected on the 15 pounds I wanted to lose and being closer to 40 than 30…).

But just like that, we were inseparable. We instantly hit it off. She was fun, funny, and challenged me to be a better teacher and leader. She became my roommate and one of my very closest friends. A confidant, a party-pal, a TV binge-watching, popcorn-eating buddy and fellow wine lover. I stood beside her as she got married. We’ve vacationed together and go on double dates. I still tease her that I could be her mother, and I love her like family. I’d even say I’ve watched her grow up these past 7 years.

I don’t work with her anymore nor do we live as close as we once did. So times like today, when I get to spend a few hours with her, I remember to appreciate how the universe brought this kindred soul into my path. I heard you loud and clear, universe.

Thank you.

  1. Finding YOUR people is the best. I had an experience similar to yours a few years ago, and even though we no longer work together anymore, it feels like we pick up right where we left off!

  2. My first teaching partner was 20 years older than myself. Twenty-six years later we are still in touch and try to spend a few days together each year. Your post reminded me how lucky I was to find my work buddy. We caught up two weeks ago- I’m glad you got to catch up with your friend today.

  3. I LOVE this! I think about this same thing all the time. If just one little moment in our lives hadn’t happened the way that they did, what else could be different about who we know and love or the paths our lives took. It’s crazy to think about.

  4. The universe just knows. I love how we meet people and never truly know how long their visit is going to last. Some stay for a season and others a lifetime.

  5. What a wonderful celebration of your friendship! One of my dearest friends is more than 20 years older than I am. We also met at work, but I was the new colleague (though not peppy and young!). I’m ever thankful for her and our friendship. Thank you for reminding me how important it is to take time to be grateful.
